Funds raised at “burger night” to go to local KidStart program

The John Howard Society of North Island is hoping many attend Monday’s “Burger, Beer and Silent Auction Night.”

It is taking place at Campbell River’s Match Eatery and proceeds raised will go towards the local KidStart Mentoring Program.

“Our goal is to sell-out,” says Tara Jordan, program coordinator. “Glen Clark, our KidStart mentor and a businessman in Campbell River, has just pledged to donate $1000 to KidStart if we sell out that day. I’m hoping to raise at least $2000, that would be amazing and very helpful.”

As the only mentoring program in Campbell River, KidStart was established shortly after Big Brothers/Sisters closed its doors due to a lack of money.

“Because we don’t get the core government funding we need, we have to fundraise every cent to run the program and help the 187 kids on our waitlist,” Jordan says.

The children in KidStart are between the ages of six to 18 and are considered vulnerable or have the potential to become vulnerable.

“They’re just kids predominantly coming from single-parent families, struggling socio-economically and who just need a little extra support. Any help that the community gives to KidStart that day will, in turn, be helping the kids that need it most in our community.”

Tickets are $25 each and come with a burger or veggie burger, fries, drink (house wine, draft beer, or non-alcoholic beverage), as well as a $5 coupon for free slot play.

5:00pm, 6:00pm and 7:00pm seatings are on the schedule with a limit of 50 guests per seating.

There will also be $1000 in silent auction items up for grabs.

Tickets for the upcoming “Burger, Beer and Silent Auction Night” can be purchased by calling the John Howard Society of North Island at 250-286-0611.
