Fish migration flows to begin at Elk Falls Canyon, BC Hydro releases safety notice

You’re asked to use extra caution around Elk Falls in the coming weeks.

BC Hydro says it will begin steelhead salmon migration and spawning flows down the canyon on Feb. 19th and 20th.

During this time, the water releases from the John Hart Dam will increase from four cubic metres per second (m3/s) to 10 m3/s.

This will help ensure the steelhead have access to good habitat from the powerhouse tunnel outlet area up to the falls’ base.

The higher water flows will then continue every Wednesday and Thursday until Mar. 19th.

Out of consideration for public safety, BC Hydro will begin to increase the water discharges for each of the migration flows from the dam at night.

A public safety advisory is in place for the river from John Hart Dam to Elk Falls during this time.

Temporary safety signage is in place.
