Reports of accused human trafficker seen in Campbell River “unsubstantiated”

Social media reports can lead to unnecessary fears in the community.

This comes from the Campbell River RCMP after someone posted reports on Facebook that an accused human trafficker from Victoria was spotted in the city.

Someone said Shermineh Sheri Ziaee was in town yesterday.

While the poster may have had the best intentions of protecting people in the community, the RCMP says it’s also important to recognize that if you can’t see the license plate of a vehicle it’s unlikely you can positively identify the driver.

“If indeed someone saw an accused human trafficker in the community, we would hope that they would contact the police,” says Cst. Maury Tyre. “In this case that never happened, making it nearly impossible to substantiate any claims of what this individual poster witnessed.”

In terms of human trafficking, those in the community are urged to have honest discussions with their children about it.

The Campbell River RCMP says that it recognizes people’s intentions are usually positive but urges anyone with information about a crime or a suspicious person to give them a call them at 250-286-6221.
