The Campbell River SPCA is receiving lots of love.
It recently wrapped up its annual month-long Loonies for Love fundraiser, raising close to $1000 for its daily operations.
The funds came after paper hearts were sold for one dollar each at various locations around town in February.
“People can put information on the heart,” says Stephanie Arkwright, branch manager. “They can put their name, a friend’s name, family members or their pets name which seems to be the most popular. They make a donation to the shelter and we display the hearts for the whole month.”
Dogwood Petmart raked in $450, while another $510 was raised between Merecroft Veterinary Clinic, Dogwood Veterinary Hospital, Campbell River Veterinary Hospital, Campbell River Veterinary Hospital grooming and the branch itself.
“It’s a pretty popular event. We usually raise a fair amount every year and it seems to be pretty steady. Some years we raise a little bit more, other years we raise a little bit less. But it definitely is a really successful fundraiser,” Arkwright says.
She’s stressing the importance of donating to local fundraisers and is blown away by the support the branch has received from the Campbell River community.
“I think it’s always amazing that there’s room for our communities more vulnerable animals. If we put a plea out, people come together and they help us.”
With animals not having a voice, Arkwright adds it’s “amazing to have animal-lovers come together and be able to be their voice and help support them.”
The Loonies for Love fundraiser is set to return next February.
