Campbell River driftwood artist hopes to find missing owl sculpture

There’s something special missing from Stories Beach.

Drifted Creations artist Alex Witcombe took to Facebook and shared that Buckminster the Owl “has been owl-napped and is no longer there.”

He’s hoping whoever stole the beloved sculpture will re-think their actions and return it to its home.

“It really sucks that in these times when people need every tiny scrap of joy they can, someone makes the deliberate choice to remove one of these pieces of joy,” Witcombe says.

He’s optimistic the Campbell River community will keep an eye out for Buckminster, as this isn’t the first time one of his creations has gone missing.

Fergus the Fox was stolen from its location in the Beaver Lodge Lands trails in early May of 2018.

Once found, it was then relocated to Oyster River Nature Park before being stolen again in July of last year.

A tip eventually led the Campbell River RCMP to Fergus’ whereabouts.

Witcombe says he can’t say for sure the personal motivations this time, but he does have a message for whoever’s responsible: “If you nabbed Buckminster in the hopes of displaying him in your yard or garden, maybe think twice and anonymously return him.”

He says that somebody somewhere at some point is going to recognize the sculpture and then the thieves “game is up.”

“Do the right thing. Return the joy you have taken,” Witcombe adds.
