SD72 getting $2.2 million from province for capital projects

Campbell River’s School District 72 will be getting some upgrades.

It’s receiving $2.2 million from the Ministry of Education.

The funds will go towards projects from the district’s five-year capital plan request under the school enhancement program, carbon-neutral program and the bus renewal fund.

“It’s really good news,” says Secretary-Treasurer Kevin Patrick. “We’ve been fairly successful with our applications from our capital plan that we submitted back in June. We will be required to spend this within the next year, so some of the planning for these projects have begun.”

Five projects were approved for capital funding by the province.

This includes a boiler upgrade at Ecole Willow Point ($167,000), a roof replacement at Quadra Elementary School ($316,000), heating and ventilation upgrades at Southgate Middle School ($390,500), and roof replacements to two sections at Timberline Secondary School (combined total of $461,000).

In order to receive the money, SD72’s Board of Education needed to pass a capital plan bylaw.

It was passed unanimously and adopted.

Each year, every school district from across British Columbia is asked to submit a list of its required capital projects to the Ministry of Education.

The province then considers and prioritizes these requests to distribute capital project funding.
