Unstaffed recycling depots in Courtenay and Campbell River closing July 1st

The Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) unstaffed recycling depots in both Campbell River and Courtenay will be closing effective July 1st.

General Manager of Engineering Services Marc Rutten says the two centers located at Campbell River’s Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex and the Courtenay Country Market were a problem, rather than a solution.

“We want to uphold a great standard for recycling in our area, and these unstaffed depots were targets for illegal dumping that just don’t reflect the standard of service that we would like to see with our waste management service,” said Rutten.

“Thankfully, there are a number of Recycle BC supported options in our communities that allow us to recycle more items, more effectively.”

Some of those options include municipal curbside recycling service, or dropping off recyclables at one of the local Return-It depots or at either of the waste management centres in the region.

CSWM says not only do the alternative Recycle BC supported locations accept more streams of recyclable materials, but staff are also present to observe and correct sorting errors and educate the public.
