Strathcona Regional District reopens select outdoor park facilities

You can now enjoy some more outdoor park facilities within the Strathcona Regional District.

Although the majority of the district’s parks and trails have remained opened, numerous outdoor amenities have been closed since March 23rd.

This was in an effort to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

The following outdoor park facilities have reopened this week:

  • Hagel Park Tennis/Basketball Courts – Electoral Area D
  • Blenkin Park Facilities (Tennis/Basketball Courts and Skatepark) – Electoral Area C
  • Cortes Island Basketball Court and Skatepark – Electoral Area B

Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex, Quadra Island Community Centre, regional campgrounds, playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment, picnic shelters and water fountains throughout the region remain closed at this time.

The SRD says it’s focused on working within the health guidelines and provincial directives to have these facilities open as soon as it is safe to do so.

As the province has identified community gardens as an essential service due to them being an important food source, the SRD recently reopened the Maple Park Community Garden in Electoral Area D to existing members only.

It remains closed to the general public at this time.

While enjoying SRD parks and facilities, residents are reminded to practice physical distancing while taking extra precautionary measures.

If you are feeling unwell or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, you’re asked to not visit any of the SRD’s parks or trails.

The district says parks are being routinely inspected and any closures or physical distancing violations observed are being addressed.
