Teens and young adults are joining forces tomorrow to clean up a popular beach in Willow Point.
The Youth 20/20 Can Project clean up is happening at Ken Forde Park from 2:30pm to 4:30pm on July 8th.
Volunteer Campbell River is spearheading the local event for people between the ages of 15 and 29.
Youth engagement assistant, Sarah Robinson, is helping to organize the event.
Robinson said the Youth 20/20 Can Project is designed to get young people involved in community initiatives.
“The goal of the project is to engage youth across Canada and more specifically, Vancouver Island, in volunteering. Building work skills, (having) new experiences, and a sense of belonging in engaging in our community,” she said.
She added that they chose Ken Forde Park because it’s a popular place for beach fires and other social gatherings.
“We wanted to make sure it’s nice and clean and a place for people to go and socialize outside right now.”
The Youth Engagement Workers from each volunteer centre will be there to help, encourage and support the youth volunteers, while maintaining physical distancing protocols.
Youth 20/20 Can is funded by the Government of Canada under the Canada Service Corps. Canada Service Corps is building a national movement to, it says, “build a culture of volunteer service that empowers young Canadians to make an impact.”
You’re invited to bring your friends.
Bags and gloves will be provided, but bring some if you have them.
If you have a vehicle and can volunteer some time to dispose of garbage collected, you’re asked to contact your local volunteer centres for more information.
