BMX track proposed for Campbell River

The Campbell BMX Association wants to see a new track in the city.

This past Monday, Jason Kerluck and Corby Johnson spoke to city council members, on behalf of the association.

They’re requesting that the city look at a location for a local BMX facility.

The association is hoping to build a groomed dirt track for weekly racing events from April to October.

It would require up to five acres (includes parking space) and the track would be open for public use outside race times.

They said a central area, near other recreation facilities such as the Sportsplex would be ideal.

Kerluck told the council that the track would bring opportunities to riders of all levels.

“We’ve had racers as young as two and as old as 70 who’ve raced in BMX,” he said. “We would have the opportunity to host local races – island, provincial, national, and potentially international races. The track would be open to the public and we would run races and practices weekly during the seven-month season.”

Kerluck pointed out that they have support from Cycling BC, BMX Canada and island and provincial tracks and island families.

Johnson said an ideal location would be central and available for high use from riders.

“Ideally (it would be) near other recreation facilities to promote with our community and search for sponsors, collaborate with other BMX tracks, BMX Canada, Cycling BC, to develop a track design and build a budget, and ideally start building in the fall or spring, and complete for participation in the 2021 season.”

Mayor Andy Adams noted that he had attended a ribbon-cutting to open phase two of the bike skills park at the Sportsplex earlier Monday and that “cycling is in the forefront today.”

The presentation was recorded as part of the Council meeting and can be seen here.
