The heat is back on.
So much so, a special weather statement has been issued for much of coastal B.C. including East Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.
It’s impacting:
- East Vancouver Island – Courtenay to Campbell River
- East Vancouver Island – Duncan to Nanaimo
- East Vancouver Island – Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay
- Sunshine Coast – Gibsons to Earls Cove
- Sunshine Coast – Saltery Bay to Powell River
An upper ridge of high pressure will draw warm air northward from the United States this week.
Temperatures will peak on Wednesday and Thursday with daytime highs that are five to 10 degrees Celsius above seasonal for this time of year. Overnight lows will also be up to five degrees warmer than seasonal in some areas.
Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says we could see heat records fall in some places tomorrow.
“Records are in the high 20s for places like Campbell River and Courtenay and about 29 (degrees Celsius) in Powell River, and we’re forecasting pretty close to those marks, being in the high 20s”
He added that because temperature records are generally lower in Central Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast for Sept. 10th, there is a potential that some could fall on Thursday, as well.
“They’re closer to 26, 27, so even though Thursday is looking like a slightly cooler day by only a degree or so, it could still come close to records because the daily records on the 10th are slightly lower than the 9th,” Sekhon said.
To beat the heat, you should drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place, and schedule outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day.
For those who don’t like the heat, Sekhon says it should cool slightly by the weekend.
