Single-vehicle crash in Campbell River leaves one dead, two with serious injuries

A single-vehicle crash in Campbell River has left one person dead, and two with serious injuries.

Yesterday (Jan. 13th) at around 3:30 pm, RCMP responded to the crash in the 100 block of the South Island Highway.

Police say the pickup truck saw extensive damage after it veered off the highway and hit a post, some concrete and a bus stop outside the Ocean Shores apartment complex.

Local fire crews pulled out the “Jaws of Life” to remove the 50-year-old male driver. Police believe he suffered a “severe medical event” that caused the crash and that alcohol or drugs were not a factor.

The driver along with a 53-year-old male passenger and a 73-year-old female passenger were sent to the Campbell River Hospital. RCMP were advised that the driver succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital later in the day.

An RCMP traffic reconstructionist was on scene and traffic was seriously affected by the crash for a few hours.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the driver and we are hoping for a full recovery for both passengers,” says Constable Maury Tyre.

“We’d also like to thank BC Ambulance, Campbell River Fire, and medical staff at the Campbell River Hospital for their outstanding professionalism in a very difficult situation.”

As the crash is still under investigation, police add that no further information will be released at this time.
