BC Hydro is warning customers that fraudsters are still scamming people over the telephone.
BC Hydro media spokesperson Maurice Scott says about 2000 customers reported lately that they’ve been targeted. They threaten to cut off power unless a payment is received immediately. And to avoid disconnected, customers are asked to purchase pre-paid cash, or credits cards, and to call back to provide the serial number on the back of the card.
Scott says the fraudsters will then remove the cash from the card and will leave the customer out with hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Scott adds this is happening to utilities across Canada and North America,and they are working with authorities to try to put an end to it.
