Council reconsiders Hilchey Road cycling infrastructure

Plans are in the works for a more bike-friendly Hilchey Road.

During Monday’s meeting, Campbell River council reconsidered the road’s cycling infrastructure.

Mayor Andy Adams says it will stretch from the bottom of Hilchey, at Highway 19A, through to Dogwood Street and the Beaver Lodge lands.

“We will work with staff on how this can be incorporated with some of the infrastructure work that will be going on at Hilchey this spring,” Adams explained, “and also take a look as to, a different lens as to how we look at our master transportation plan and how it relates to cycling corridors for east/west and north/south connections throughout our community.”

Council directed staff to complete buffered painted cycling lanes as part of the Hilchey Road infrastructure project in 2021.

At a future meeting, Council will consider a report on project timing and costs, as well as design details.

Staff has also been directed to develop a cycling infrastructure plan in consultation with the cycling community and advocacy groups, before a future Master Transportation Plan review.
