Police remind drivers to slow down on Highway 19A through work zone

Speed signs are in place for a reason.

So says Campbell River RCMP, as they put out a reminder to drivers of the importance of staying within the speed limit, especially through a work zone.

Due to ongoing construction, the speed limit on Highway 19A – from the pump station south of Rockland Road to the Esso north of Rockland – is 30km/hr.

Cst. Maury Tyre says this is in effect 24-hours a day, seven days a week; not just on weekdays.

“It’s very important to understand when you see a white sign with numbers on it, those speed limits are in effect at all times,” he says.

“Part of the reason this stays that way is because medians aren’t properly in place, and you’ve got a lot of other issues like signage that hasn’t been put up properly.”

If you drive above the limit, Tyre warns you could face “substantial fines.”

As posted, the fine for driving over 30km/hr on this stretch of road is $196.

Yesterday morning (Saturday), Tyre spotted quite a few drivers speeding past. This prompted him to not only give warnings, but also educate drivers “just to let them know what’s going on so they do understand it’s not a cash grab, it’s a safety thing.”

“So try and keep the folks that are in these work zones safe. They can be working on weekends, they can be working evenings… so it’s important to follow these regulations,” Tyre adds. “You would enjoy it if your job site was as safe as possible as well.”
