Campbell River’s curbside waste collection schedule changing after May long weekend

Campbell River’s curbside garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection schedule is changing after the May long weekend.

Starting May 25th, following each statutory holiday – regular collection will move forward one weekday.

According to the City, this means Monday collection will move to Tuesday, Tuesday to Wednesday, and so on. Friday collection will move to Monday because there’s no curbside collection on Saturday or Sunday.

“This add-a-day schedule change is happening for all communities in the Comox Valley and Strathcona regional districts,” explains Campbell River’s director of operations, Drew Hadfield.

“To reduce costs, regional landfills will no longer be open to accept waste collected on statutory holidays. The contractor cannot collect two days’ worth of waste on the same day, so all routes will move forward by one day to ensure that collection continues.”

To help you keep track, stay tuned for a new tool coming soon that will provide text, email, or phone reminders about collection days and notifications when there are changes to the schedule.

Some neighbourhoods joining new curbside collection routes:

To further enhance service, the City notes some collection routes are taking on new neighbourhoods, starting June 14th.

“At this time, some routes cover more territory and collect more waste than others. By balancing out the area and amounts, we’ll reduce the chance of pickup delays due to high volume,” Hadfield says.

Along with advertising and news updates to encourage people to sign up for electronic or telephone notification, the City says it’ll send information directly to affected areas.

There’s no change to the amount or type of material picked up at the curb, and limits for garbage remain the same. Unlimited recycling and seasonal (March through November) yard waste pickup continues.
