Chamber, Destination Campbell River urging locals to vacation close to home

Campbell River’s tourism sector hopes you will be a tourist in your own town.

The Campbell River & District Chamber of Commerce and Destination Campbell River is calling for help.

They say with our summer under threat for the second year in a row, many local seasonal accommodation, wildlife, adventure tour and fishing charter businesses are facing a particularly tough time.

Chamber executive director Mary Ruth Snyder says tourism “was first impacted, hardest hit, and has endured the longest direct impacts from travel restrictions and border closures.”

“Sadly, we may lose some of our valued businesses,” she added.

Snyder says the BC tourism industry is supporting “stay local” recommendations because these restrictions “may be our last shot to save our summer for many of our tourism-dependent businesses.”

“Rebounding, reimagining, and recovering tourism in the region is going to take some time,” Snyder said.

She offered a few suggestions including:

  • treating someone to a fishing charter or private adventure tour,
  • taking your family for a field trip on a cultural tour,
  • sweetening a summer employment deal for new staff with a signing bonus of a paddleboard or kayak trip,
  • declaring Takeout Tuesday at work and ordering from a caterer that can’t host a wedding just yet, and
  • Booking a room at a seaside accommodation.

She’s also asking you to show support on social media by using hashtags #DiscoverCampbellRiver #BCTourismCounts

You can also download the Campbell River Collection App to collect and earn points for prizes, and find itinerary ideas “that feature world-class local experiences and discover more ways to make the most of your summer.”
