UPDATE: Council gave first two readings and directed a public hearing be scheduled for proposed rezoning to permit a market rental apartment building at 2221 Dalton Rd. If approved, the amendment would permit a density increase from 33 to 60 dwelling units.
Another new rental apartment building could be coming to Campbell River, but it’s sparking concern from locals.
The City issued a permit for the demolition of an old commercial building – which housed the Willow Point Bottle Depot and a barbershop – at 2210 South Island Highway.
And earlier this month, that building was torn down.

The backside of the property is 2221 Dalton Street. In February, WestUrban Developments submitted a rezoning application for 2221 Dalton for a proposed 60-unit building.
“The proposal is for a five-storey building with a full underground parkade and some surface parking,” WestUrban development director Sarah Alexander tells Vista Radio.
“The current zone allows for six-storeys. We are doing a textual amendment to change how the density is calculated, to allow for more units per hectare, while staying under the permitted height.”
Since they’re only at the rezoning application stage, Alexander says they don’t have a rendering prepared at this point.
As proposed, the building would offer 35 two-bedroom, two baths, and 25 one-bedroom, one-bath units, each with a balcony and five appliances.
The application is expected to proceed to city council within the next month for First and Second Reading. My Campbell River Now will provide more updates on this project when available.
But some locals aren’t happy with the proposed development. A petition on Change.org – ‘Oppose development for 60 units, 5-6 story high @ 2221 DALTON RD’ – has garnered over 500 signatures.
Sheri Hayward started the petition, and she says the new building would impact “our quiet neighbourhood” and “our views”. She says it would bring added traffic, and that large trees on the property would be cut down. Plus, within a two-block radius, she says 200-units have already been added within the past year.
