Sign up for reminders about curbside collection schedule changes

The City of Campbell River wants to keep you in the loop about curbside collection in your neighbourhood.

You can register for email, text, or telephone reminders about curbside garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection schedule changes.

The city’s director of operations, Drew Hadfield, says signing up for reminders will help people keep current on future collection schedule changes.

“You will also receive notices if there are delays due to weather or when there is new waste disposal information available,” he added.

To reduce waste management costs, landfills in the Comox Valley and Strathcona Regional districts are no longer open on stat holidays.

Following this week’s holiday Monday, Campbell River’s curbside collection moved forward one weekday.

Collection from households previously on Monday routes moved to Tuesday, Tuesday routes moved to Wednesday, and so on.

Friday collection moved to today (Monday, May 31st) because there is no curbside collection on Saturday or Sunday.

Collection days will bump forward again for every future stat holiday that falls on a weekday.

If a statutory holiday falls on the weekend, there is no schedule change.

“Collection day will continue as it is this week until Canada Day. After the statutory holiday on July 1, collection day will bump forward by one weekday again,” Hadfield said. “This add-a-day schedule change ensures that routes are collected with minimal delay.”

Campbell River Recycles, the app to help people keep track of the collection schedule, will be available in early June directly through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

A link is also available through the City’s website (campbellriver.ca/solid-waste).

Collection calendars, answers to frequently asked questions, and extensive recycling information are also available.

The city is also sending letters to households joining new curbside collection routes

Along with the add-a-day schedule change, some collection routes will be adjusted, starting June 14th.

The City will send information directly – and only – to affected areas.

Envelopes will be prominently marked: IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT WASTE COLLECTION CHANGES.

“These adjustments will balance out the area and number of households on routes to reduce the chance of delays on routes that currently cover more territory and collect more waste,” Hadfield said.

“Please open your mail to find out more details about changes for your household. In some cases, new boundaries are in the centre of the street, so people living across from each other might have different garbage days coming up.”

He added, “The app works with your address, so if you register, and your household is also joining a new route, you’ll be notified about any changes beyond the add-a-day following the statutory holidays.”

There is no change to the amount or type of material picked up at the curb. Limits for garbage are the same. Unlimited recycling and seasonal (March through November) yard waste pickup continues.
