New bike lanes coming to Hilchey Road

Some good news for cyclists around town: The City of Campbell River says new bike lanes are coming to Hilchey Road this summer.

The City will fit the $150,000 bill through the Community Works Fund. The lanes will run on both sides of the road, from Highway 19A all the way to Dogwood Street.

To make room, one of the parking lanes on Hilchey will be removed. The City says maintaining parking on the south side of Hilchey is preferred because it’s adjacent to the existing sidewalk. The road will maintain two traffic lanes.

The Campbell River Cycling Club was really the driving force behind it all. Last fall, city council received a letter from the club requesting safer cycling infrastructure for the busy road.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the Campbell River cycling community on how we can integrate cycling into our transportation Master plan,” Mayor Andy Adams tells My Campbell River Now.

The new bike lanes will be completed in two phases due to water main work underway on Hilchey to the east of Galerno Road. That project is anticipated to start this month and work will continue through the summer. This means the bike lanes west of Galerno will be completed first, with the lanes to the east completed once the water main project wraps up.
