RCMP seeking witnesses, dashcam footage after fatal car crash in Union Bay

Police in the Comox Valley are still asking for the public’s help after last week’s fatal car crash south of Courtenay.

On Thursday (June 3rd) just before noon, police were called after a Nissan Pathfinder drove off the road and down an embankment in the 5800-block of the Old Island Highway in Union Bay.

Police say several witnesses stopped to help, lifting the SUV off a trapped passenger. The 48-year-old woman was sent to hospital via BC EHS Air Ambulance, but died the following day. The driver sustained minor injuries.

“The cause of this crash is still under investigation,” Cst. Monika Terragni says. “Investigators are looking for witnesses who observed the collision, who observed the vehicle prior to the collision, or who may have dash-cam footage.”

Terragni says the BC Coroners Service has been notified and is conducting its own fact-finding investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321 and refer to file 2021-8780. To make an anonymous report, call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-TIPS, or submit a tip online.
