Stage 2 watering restrictions take effect in Campbell River

Campbell River is now in stage 2 watering restrictions.

This limits watering lawns, gardens, trees and shrubs to once a week.

  • Residential watering is permitted 5:00am to 9:00am and 7:00pm to 10:00pm (even-numbered addresses Monday, odd-numbered addresses Thursday)
  • Non-residential – 1:00am to 5:00am (even-numbered addresses Wednesday, and odd-numbered addresses Tuesday)

Watering gardens and plant beds by hand, or using a hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle, is allowed at any time.

The city says Campbell River’s daily water consumption has increased dramatically over the last few days.

As a result, the city says its water system cannot safely meet this exceptionally high residential water demand and maintain enough water in the pipes for fire safety.

“Running a sprinkler in the backyard is not currently permitted outside watering times, but people can fill up a small pool to help keep kids cool on these hot dry days,” says Drew Hadfield, the City’s director of operations. “Also, the Splash Park remains open.”

The City has provided a Q&A regarding the water restrictions:

How long will they last?

These restrictions will stay in effect until further notice. Once the demand has decreased enough that we have adequate fire protection water and the heat levels off, the City will return to regular watering restrictions.

What happens if I don’t follow them?

People found using water contrary to water restrictions will be advised of permitted activities and provided with suggestions to help lower water use. Repeat offenders are subject to a fine.

What is the City doing to tell people about the restrictions?

Along with posting information at campbellriver.ca and on social media, the City is issuing a news release and will run notices in the newspaper. We’re also going door-to-door, providing information regarding the restrictions. We’re encouraging residents to pass the message along to all their neighbours and friends as well.

Are watering restrictions in place in Area D? Yes.

Yes, that area is the Strathcona Regional District is moving to a stage 2 watering restrictions also.

What do I do if I see someone else not following them?

Please let them know the details of the restrictions that are in place in case they have not yet heard about this serious situation and the need to conserve water. To report people not following the restrictions, please email [email protected] or call the water hotline at 250-203-2316.

Why are sports fields and golf courses allowed to water with sprinklers?

Sports fields and golf courses are engineered turfs, designed to withstand extended use. Their replacement costs range in the tens of thousands of dollars if neglected. All sports fields and golf courses are metered and charged for their water usage, and have special exemptions which allow them to avoid permanent loss of vegetation.
