‘Safe exchange zone’ now in Campbell River

Following in the footsteps of other communities, Campbell River now has its own ‘safe exchange zone’ outside the RCMP detachment.

The parking spot offers a neutral location to transfer kids between parents or guardians with a shared child custody agreement. As well, it can be used as a meeting place to exchange goods bought and sold online.

According to the City, a prominent sign marks the spot. And while it won’t be actively monitored, it’s noted the location is under video surveillance, with locals having easy access to help if needed.

The Campbell River RCMP detachment is at 275 South Dogwood Street. Office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm. Outside of office hours, there’s a phone at the front door to contact emergency support if needed.

“Several other Canadian communities have created a designated ‘safe exchange zone’ at their local RCMP detachment, where support is close at hand if required,” adds RCMP inspector Jeff Preston.

He continues, “As always, the safety and security of the community is our priority, and this is an excellent way to promote safe and respectful interactions.”
