Saturday rally in Campbell River will focus on climate change

Campbell River’s Extinction Rebellion group says we’re hitting a crossroads with the climate crisis, sparking a need for action to be taken now.

With this in mind, they’re hosting a gathering at the intersection of St. Ann’s Road and Shoppers Row tomorrow (Saturday) from noon until 2:00 pm.

Organizers say those interested in having their voices heard about the climate crisis are invited to join, helping raise awareness about the situation they deem “dangerous and urgent.”

“Please bring signs, banners, voices, and enthusiasm,” reads a Facebook event page. “We will be handing out leaflets and will have a banner to get the message across.”

According to the Rebellion, 2021 has brought “our worst fears” about the accelerating climate crisis to light. They say it’s an issue impacting Vancouver Island, all of B.C., Canada, and the world.

“Whilst B.C. tackles a horrific fire season, our neighbors to the south are also battling terrible fires brought on by tinder-dry record-breaking heat and the continuing drying-out of the American west. The harvest in the Prairies is being badly impacted by protracted heat and drought conditions,” the Rebellion says.

They continue, “Climate Change must be front and center of the conversation in Canada during this election cycle, and worldwide as we approach COP26 in November. August 21st is the first action date of a series of escalations planned by XR throughout the coming months.”

Extinction Rebellion, founded in 2018, credits itself as an ‘international movement’ that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction, helping minimize the risk of social collapse.
