Wasting disease hitting local sea stars

The alarming sea star wasting disease that first hit Howe Sound now looks to be infecting local sea stars.

Sandra Milligan a biology professor at North Island College says she was out on the Willow Point Reef on the weekend and saw fewer sea stars and those with signs of the disease.

Milligan says she didn’t see those signs back in May, so the infection could be recent.

Milligan says we went back to the reef to do a count and says 10 percent of the sea stars she and her team saw were diseased.

The local aquarium and the Vancouver Aquarium are all on the case trying to work out what is going on and how to track the disease.
