The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) says it will be observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation next week.

Earlier this year, the federal government officially designated the last day of September as a day to commemorate the tragic legacy of violence and abuse of residential schools in Canada.

That said, Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex in Campbell River plans to offer a limited schedule on Thurs., Sept. 30th, hosting an ‘Everyone Welcome Swim’ from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm, public skating from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm, plus private user group rentals.

“The recent findings of unmarked graves has been tragic and we acknowledge the pain and trauma experienced by Indigenous Peoples across the country,” said SRD Board Chair Brad Unger.

As well, to recognize the legacy of the country’s residential schools, the SRD’s corporate office will actually be closed on Sept. 30th.

“The SRD is committed to reconciliation and encourages its employees and others to use this day to reflect, spread awareness and honor the survivors, their families and the children who did not return home from residential school,” Unger added.
