Greenways hosting info sessions for planned restoration work at Willow Creek Conservation Area

Campbell Riverites are being called on to help enhance fish and wildlife habitat within Willow Creek Conservation Area (WCCA).

Starting this weekend, Greenways Land Trust is hosting volunteer information sessions leading up to the area’s restoration work, which is set for this fall.

From 10 am until 2 pm tomorrow (Oct. 2), and again on Wednesday (Oct. 6) from 10 am until noon and 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm, Greenways will be out front of the Martin Rd. entrance to chat with trail users about the upcoming project.

It will involve replanting trees and shrubs and laying bark mulch and logs. According to Greenways, the Martin Rd. area “has experienced significant soil erosion and impacts to fish habitat.”

They say restoration efforts will reduce sedimentation into Willow Creek, which can otherwise suffocate juvenile salmon and salmon eggs.

“There’s a lot of traffic within the Willow Creek Conservation area. I think it’s a really cherished space for a lot of people in the surrounding area,” Urban Watershed Restoration Co-coordinator, Melody Fraser tells My Campbell River Now.

During the information sessions, visitors will have an opportunity to walk with volunteers, project lead, Camille Andrews, and WCCA landowners, the Nature Trust.

As well, Greenways will be handing out brochures on how trail users and neighbours of WCCA can do their part to protect valuable fish and wildlife habitats.

No registration is required to attend a session, but locals should bring a mask and ensure social distancing, Greenways adds. For more details, Camille Andrews can be reached at (250) 287-3785.
