Muchalat Lake Campground staying open this winter

On Vancouver Island, camping isn’t just a summer activity. This year, the Muchalat Campground near Gold River is staying open through the winter.

At its Wednesday board meeting, Strathcona Regional District (SRD) announced that the campground would operate through the colder months into 2022 on a trial basis.

According to the SRD, that’s all thanks to an agreement made between various partners, including the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Village of Gold River, the Gold River Rod and Gun Club, and the district itself.

It says an SRD Electoral Area A grant-in-aid of $1,000 along with a $1,000 grant from the Village of Gold River will help the Rod and Gun Club with maintenance and caretaking services.

“The Muchalat Campground is popular during the hunting season, and it will be great to see it well-used and enjoyed respectfully this winter with this pilot project,” adds SRD Chair Brad Unger.

Described as a large, treed site on the east side of Muchalat Lake, the campground has its own boat ramp, dock, beach and swimming area. Find more details here.
