Snow Day: Local schools closed; drivers urged to slow down

UPDATE: The snowfall warning has come to an end.

It’s a snowy start to the week in Campbell River.

School District 72 says all schools are closed today (Monday, Dec. 6) due to weather, with district programs, evening events and facility rentals cancelled.

Campbell River Christian School is also closed, and staff say the accumulation of snow and unsafe road conditions are to blame.

Meanwhile, North Island College’s Mixalakwila campus in Port Hardy has closed its doors for the day, but the Campbell River campus remains open.

Currently, Environment Canada’s snowfall warning remains for East and Inland Vancouver Island.

The weather agency says snow is expected to continue, with total snowfall amounts 5 to 15 cm near the water and up to 25 cm inland.

Near midday, the snow should transition to rain or wet snow mixed with rain showers, and Environment Canada urges drivers to adjust their driving with changing road conditions.

Earlier this morning, Campbell River RCMP shared tips to avoid accidents, which included slowing down, leaving space with the car in front, and keeping a car off the road if it doesn’t have snow tires.

At around 8 am, while patrolling at the corner of Dogwood St. and 7th Ave., Cst. Maury Tyre posted a video to the detachment’s Facebook page: “We do have lights off all over town,” he said.

“Please remember, even without a flashing red, if it’s a controlled intersection, you must come to a 4-way stop. Treat it as a 4-way stop. Please do not rush through lights,” Tyre added.
