Campbell River warming shelter to remain open amid cold weather

As freezing temperatures continue in the area, Campbell River’s warming shelter will remain open into the new year.

The extreme weather shelter at the Campbell River Community Centre on 11th Avenue will be run nightly from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. until Jan. 4.

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) says since the shelter was activated on Dec. 24, they have seen an average of 30 people using the shelter each night. They say snacks, warm drinks, washrooms and cots are provided in addition to the warm space.

The city hopes to provide more warmth and shelter during the cold snap.

“Access to this shelter could be the difference between life and death for those who are under-housed and for people experiencing homelessness during these freezing temperatures,” said the city in a release Thursday.

The shelter is staffed with appropriate personnel to keep safety precautions adhered to, according to the SRD.

“We would like to thank the tremendous effort of all staff and volunteers who have taken time away from their families during the holiday season to support this emergency response,” said the district.
