North Island communities without power since Tuesday

Outages continue to plague parts of the North Island, as BC Hydro reports thousands of its customers are without power.

In Port Hardy, 1710 households are currently in the dark with a downed power line to blame.

East of Duval Rd. and north of Holberg Rd., BC Hydro says the power’s been out since 7:44 this morning (Jan. 6), but notes crews are on-site with the power expected to come back around 10:30 am.

Meanwhile, between Tahsis and Zeballos, 711 households have been without power since 12:47 am on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

A transmission circuit failure caused this outage, and BC Hydro says crews are assigned to get the power restored.

In a Wednesday update, the company noted recent heavy snowfall caused extensive damage: “We assessed damage using a helicopter yesterday, and we began work in areas where it was safe to do so,” it said.

BC Hydro added, “as more heavy snowfall is expected, work progress will be dependent on the weather conditions and crews’ ability to safely access damaged areas. As a result, we expect these customers will be without power for at least another day.”

We’ll update this story when more details are available.
