More power outages hit Campbell River, Sayward, Quadra

We’re ending off the workweek with more local power outages.

BC Hydro says the power is out for just under 1,600 of its customers in the Campbellton and Campbell River north areas, east of Gold River Hwy., west of Homewood Rd., south of Island Way and north of 9th Ave.

This outage struck at 11:22 am today, Jan. 7, and BC Hydro says the recent snowstorm is to blame.

No crew has been assigned yet, and there’s no word on when electricity will be restored, but further updates will be posted here.

Outages hit small, remote communities:

North of Campbell River, in Sayward, BC Hydro says it’s investigating an outage that has left 200 or so of its customers without power since around 5:30 this morning.

Meanwhile, the outages are all over the map on Quadra and Cortes Islands.

The company says thousands are without power in these remote areas, and it’s sharing more details on its Vancouver Island North outage page.

And in Zeballos and Tahsis, 711 households have been without power since 12:47 am on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

A transmission circuit failure caused this outage, and BC Hydro says crews are assigned to restore the power.

In a Wednesday update, the company noted recent heavy snowfall caused extensive damage: “We assessed damage using a helicopter yesterday, and we began work in areas where it was safe to do so,” it said.

BC Hydro added, “as more heavy snowfall is expected, work progress will be dependent on the weather conditions and crews’ ability to safely access damaged areas. As a result, we expect these customers will be without power for at least another day.”
