Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex reopens during arbitration

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) and United Steelworker (USW) have reached an arbitration agreement, and the recreation complex can now reopen.

Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex will now reopen on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to a press release from the SRD. The arenas will be available for booked ice user groups on Tuesday, with the entire complex open to the public on Wednesday.

A strike action had been in place since Nov. 1, 2021. Services and programming have been postponed at the facility since Nov. 22. An agreement between the SRD and USW about a pay increase was not reached.

The centre will now reopen as both the SRD and USW use an independent mediator/arbitrator to move forward and negotiate a new agreement.

The district says COVID safety protocols and public health orders are still in place.

They thank the public for their patience during the strike and are welcoming the community back to the facility.
