Fraudulent phone calls prompt warning from RCMP

Police on Quadra Island are asking you to guard your information if you receive fraudulent phone calls.

Quadra Island RCMP say the warning comes after a resident recently got a call from what she thought was a local business.

The person said the phone call was from Quadra Café, but when she answered the phone it turned out to be a fraudster claiming to be from Service Canada.

The fraudster said there was an issue with the person’s social insurance number and more information was needed. The person realized the call was a scam and refused to give any more information before hanging up.

Quadra RCMP is asking residents to be cautious with what they share over the phone with calls like these.

“These calls are not from local residents or businesses in Quadra,” said Cst. Rebekah Draht. “If you receive such a call, hang up immediately. Do not provide any information to the caller.”

Police ask residents to call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) at 1-888-495-8501 and local police if they receive similar calls.

Reports can also be made on the CAFC website.
