IIO investigating death of man held in custody in Campbell River

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC) is investigating the death of a man in Campbell River.

According to BC RCMP, Campbell River RCMP arrested a man on June 23 for breach of probation at around 10:45 a.m. The man was held in custody at the Campbell River detachment.

At 11 p.m., a guard found the man unresponsive and in medical distress, according to RCMP.

They say officers provided first aid until Emergency Health Services arrived and he was transported to hospital. The man later died.

The IIO BC has been notified and will be investigating the incident to determine if police actions contributed to the man’s death.

No further information will be released by RCMP.
