Extreme weather shelter to open tonight in Campbell River

As temperatures are forecast to drop below zero, an extreme weather shelter will open in Campbell River tonight.

The centre is being opened by the city and the Strathcona Regional District. Located at the Campbell River Community Centre, it will be open from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. tomorrow.

The shelter will be staffed by professionals from the Coalition to End Homelessness.

Mayor Kermit Dahl says the shelter could be necessary for many experiencing homelessness.

“This shelter could be the difference between life and death for people experiencing homelessness or living outdoors during extreme weather,” said Dahl.

“Thank you to the community for your patience as we adjust programming at the Community Centre to provide warmth and shelter during these extremely cold temperatures.”

Funding for the shelter is provided by the province through Emergency Management BC.
