Strathcona Regional District receives over $300k for tsunami initiatives

To support tsunami risk reduction initiatives and public art projects, the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is receiving a $319,000 grant.

SRD Chair, Mark Baker lays out some examples of projects that the funding will boost.

“Made possible through our partnership with multiple First Nations and municipalities, this
funding will allow the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) to support tsunami risk reduction initiatives throughout and beyond the west coast of the region,” says Baker.

“For example, developing a building plan and engineered design for renovating the Walters Island Community Hall in Kyuquot to serve as a tsunami vertical evacuation structure is just one of the initiatives that this funding will support”.

According to the SRD, a tsunami vertical evacuation structure will not only create artificial high ground, but it would allow for closer refuge to where people are living and help save lives.

Along with redesigning the Walters Island Community Hall to withstand the effects related to earthquakes and tsunamis, the funding will also support other projects.

Those include screenings of a documentary, called Tsunami: 11th Relative, in thirteen different Vancouver Island communities, paintings of First Nation murals on the shipping containers, and a tsunami education brochure.
