Late-night ferry crash caused cancellations for Quadra Island ferry Friday

Multiple sailings between Campbell River and Quadra Island were canceled due to a crash on Friday night.

The Island K’ulut’a vessel crashed at Quathiaski Cove on Quadra Island, where according to BC Ferries on Twitter, maintenance repairs were needed.

A 12-person water taxi was sourced to provide services for the situation, where there were no injuries, and the vessel and berth suffered minor damages, according to BC Ferries Executive Director of Public Affairs, Deborah Marshall.

As a result of the incident, the Island K’ulut’a vessel had sailing cancelations for 5:25 pm and 5:50 pm, with Island Nagalis cancelling sailings at 5:25, 5:50, 6:15, and 7:00 pm.

Marshall adds following a full inspection of both the vessel and berth, they determined it was safe to continue service, with Island Nagalis returning to service at 7:30 pm, and  Island K’ulut’a returned the next day.

Berth repairs will take another couple of weeks, as they require a marine rig to lift the outer pad back into place.

They add that until they finish the repairs, the vessels set to come into Quathiaski Cove will have a slow bell, meaning that they are approaching at a slower speed.

They are continuing their investigation into what caused the landing.
