Campbell River resident sentenced for child porn

A Campbell River resident has been sentenced to 13 months in jail following a child pornography investigation by Campbell River RCMP.

The investigation began in May 2021, when the BC Integrated Child Exploitation Unit told police that child porn was detected online by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

They later found out that the pornography came from a Campbell River home, with a search warrant being executed in October of that year and police seizing several devices.

The devices all contained thousands of images and videos that fit the definition of child pornography, resulting in Leslie Harold Hamilton, 66, pleading guilty to possession of child pornography.

This report comes following an RCMP stat that showed a 25 per cent increase in child pornography reports from 2021 to 2022.

Inspector Jeff Preston, officer in charge of Campbell River RCMP detachment, says people need to be aware of how child pornography is not a victimless crime.

“In fact, it creates a market and demand for the further exploitation and abuse of children,” says Preston.

Hamilton has now been sentenced in BC Provincial Court. In addition to the jail time, he received 13 two years probation, a five-year sex offender prohibition, will be on the sex offender registry for 20 years and must provide a DNA sample.
