Salmon farm protesters rally on foreshore, call for closures

A group of salmon farm protesters held a rally on the foreshore this afternoon, walking from Roberts Reach to the foreshore park.

Singing and drumming, they were met with cheers and honks of support from passing drivers along the highway.

The group of more than a dozen people, led by hereditary chief George Quocksister, carried signs asking the fisheries minister to get the farms out of the ocean immediately, saying that 2025, when the leases of the last farms on the Island’s east coast expire, is too late.

Most farms in the Broughton Archipelago region have been closed, and DFO confirmed this spring it will not renew the licences for 14 farms in the Discovery Islands when they finish harvesting.
