Hydro seeks contractor to make 74-year-old dam earthquake-safe

BC Hydro is going ahead with plans to rebuild the Ladore Dam, part of the Campbell River hydroelectric system.

The utility is seeking bids from contractors for the project to upgrade the dam, built in 1949, to better withstand earthquakes. The planned seismic upgrade to the dam’s spillway gates will make sure it can safely pass water downstream following a major earthquake or during a major flood event.

Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson says once all approvals are in place construction will start in fall 2024, with completion forecasted for 2029. He says the three spillway gates, with associated hoist system components, are proposed to be replaced one at a time.

The project may generate about 70 jobs per year over about three years.
