UPDATE: Fire near Sayward grows overnight

Tuesday, 10 a.m. —

The fire near Sayward has grown overnight, and is still burning out of control.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the blaze grew to 60 hectares and is now at 90 hectares.

They add there is still no risk to critical infrastructure or homes right now, and no evacuation orders, alerts or area restrictions are in place.

Thirty firefighters are tending to an out of control blaze just over five kilometres west of Sayward, near Newcastle Creek.

According to an alert from the BC Wildfire Service, air tankers and helicopters were also deployed earlier in the afternoon, dropping water on the fire and it is around 15 hectares in size.

They add there is no risk to critical infrastructure or homes at the moment, and there are no evacuation orders or area restrictions.

The fire is visible from the community and the Village of Sayward is responding and an emergency operations centre has been activated, according to the alert.

The fire is believed to be human caused.
