More than 50 firefighters tending to Sayward blaze

The Newcastle Creek fire near Sayward is now 90 hectares in size, and 55 firefighters are tending to the blaze.

In addition to the number of firefighters, they are being aided by three helicopters and water tenders according to BC Wildfire Service.

The fire was spotted Monday afternoon, was initially around 15 hectares in size and expected to be human caused. However, BC Wildfire says it grew quickly overnight, partly due to gusty winds.

They add the fire is currently moving parallel to Sayward, but they are not recommending any evacuation alerts at the moment. The community is being impacted by smoke.

Another wildfire flared up three kilometres southwest of Gilson Lake near Campbell River Tuesday afternoon. However, BC Wildfire Service says the fire is now under control and will not spread with suppression efforts.
