Still time to donate to help kids, families and Qwalayu House

The third annual “When Pigs Fly” Radiothon is in full flight this afternoon, and there’s still time to come by in person to help kids and families.

Since sunrise, 99.7 The River and 98.9 Jet FM have been broadcasting live in front of the Maritime Heritage Centre to raise awareness for Qwalayu House, which gives families a place to stay when they need to travel for children’s health care.

The house is near the Campbell River Hospital and is owned and operated by the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.

Colleen Evans with the foundation says the house makes health care more equitable and accessible for people in remote communities.

“We want equity. We want to make sure that all the people on the North Island have as much opportunity to access care as people on the other part of the Island,” she says. “As awareness grows, more and more families are getting connected to the kind of care they need.”

Evans says the economy has been challenging for many people and the House has been able to provide some relief and peace of mind during major life events.

“When you think that since Qwalayu House has been built, 149 babies have been born here in Campbell River, that’s amazing to think about how much stress has been taken away from families that either financially were really concerned about being able to access that care, or just were struggling with being able to attend the kind appointments they needed to throughout their pregnancy,” she says.

The team will be there until 6 pm today, come visit in person or donate online anytime through the radiothon link at mycampbellrivernow.com
