Protection for drinking water, salmon being installed for dam upgrade

After this weekend, the road over the John Hart Dam will be closed for six years while BC Hydro does seismic upgrades.

The project, which will bring the dam up to modern earthquake standards, started on July 4. After Brewster Lake Road is closed, the utility will start building berms along the old penstock corridor. The berms will contain material dredged out of the reservoir upstream of the dam. That work may begin in fall, and will require a barge and crane.

Later this month, BC Hydro will install a silt curtain in the reservoir, to prevent the city’s drinking water supply and sensitive fish habitat from being affected during the upgrade work.
