Amateur whale watchers can help scientists collect data in this year’s Ocean Wise Whale Blitz, starting tomorrow.
The annual event invites people to gather at several spots on the coast to learn from the experts how to identify different species, contribute to citizen science, and hopefully spot some marine mammals in their natural habitats.
In Campbell River, the event starts at 3 pm Friday at the Discovery Pier. A pod of orcas with a calf was spotted there earlier this week. There’s also an event on Quadra Island Friday from 10 am to 2 pm at the Rebecca Spit park.
OceanWise uses data contributed by citizen scientists for its WhaleReport app.
The experts will be back at the pier again on July 17, from 3 pm to 7 pm.
