Bow-banning bylaw amended to exempt archery range after backlash

Update 8:55 a.m. Friday: City council abandons restrictions.

The Campbell River Fish and Wildlife Club’s archery range will be spared from the city’s plans to ban bow-shooting within city limits.

Council will review proposed amendments to the firearms bylaw tonight, changes prompted by an individual who refused to stop backyard target shooting. Police were unable to force him to stop because there were no specific rules to enforce.

In June council reviewed changes proposing to ban bow-shooting within city limits, but neglected to take the archery range near the Quinsam River campground into account, raising concerns from the club and target-shooting enthusiasts.

The revised bylaw in front of council tonight gives an exemption to approved archery and gun ranges and sets a fine of $300 for violators. Third reading is tonight, final adoption will be at a future meeting.
