Bylaw team needs new truck to clean up after downtown residents

The city’s bylaw officers need a new pickup truck to continue cleaning up daily after people living on the streets.

The bylaw department currently has two vehicles, including one truck, which is used regularly for downtown clean-up. The city was looking at adding an electric vehicle to the fleet for bylaw enforcement, but it’s too expensive and not adequate for the department’s current needs.

Plus, a report from staff points out, there are no charging stations near the Downtown Safety Office and installing one would cost $10,000.

Staff are recommending council approve spending $65,000 for a pickup truck bylaw officers can use downtown. The request will be considered by council at the regular meeting Sept. 7.

The city had originally budgeted $45,000 for an electric vehicle and $8,000 for related expenses.
