Smoky skies caused by local fires, may persist into Monday

There’s a lot of smoke in the air this afternoon, most of it from local wildfires.

There are still two large fires burning out of control near Sayward, which have been burning since early summer. There are nearly a dozen fires burning in Strathcona Provincial Park. They are belng left to burn because they are located in steep terrain too dangerous for firefighters to navigate.

There is also a cluster of fires burning on islands in the Broughton Archipelago region.

A smoke forecast from BC Wildfire Services shows the smoke building over the Island fires, then disappating over Campbell River and the Comox Valley. It’s expected to persist at least until Monday.

Although the smoke is visible, and has an odor, there are currently no air quality health warnings.
