Mountain bike worth $18,000 recovered from thieves

A high-end mountain bike was recovered from a camp in Nunns Creek Park before it could be sold or chopped up.

On September 9 police received a report of a stolen custom $18,000 mountain bike. They found it in Nunn’s Creek Park on September 12, while conducting another investigation and were able to return it to the rightful owner that night.

The next day police received a report of a suspicious male chopping up bikes with a powered hand tool on 15th Ave. Police investigated and seized the man’s bicycle, suspected as stolen. Shortly afterwards, they received a report of a stolen bike which had the same serial number, and were able to return it to the owner.

Constable Maury Tyre says the incident shows how important it is for people to record serial numbers on their belongings.

“This is an excellent example of how investigations into theft are able to be solved,” he says. “A witness lets people know of suspicious activity in progress that we were able to investigate and a property owner was able to provide a serial number for their stolen property which provides police the proof they need to pursue charges. Without the concerned citizen and the bike owner with a serial number, the bike likely would have never made its way back to its rightful owner and nobody would have been charged.”
